Amazon KINDLE FIRE AppStore & normal Amazon AppStore for Android? WTF?

December 3, 2011 in Gripe, How-To

Today Cory Trese invited me to try out Star Traders RPG via twitter. I decided to give a try, but something strange happened.

  • - Turned on my Kindle Fire
  • - Log on to the default twitter “app” on my Kindle Fire
  • - Clicked on the link provided by Cory Trese that points to the Amazon AppStore for Star Traders RPG

…then.. the weirdness started to happen..

I was greeted with the standard app description and displayed the price ($0.00) and invited me to do “Get Now w/ 1-click”. Great! So, I “1-clicked”.

Then I got..  “Non-compatible device. If you continue with this purchase, you may be purchasing an app that doesn’t work with your device.” - at this point, im a little confused and thinking to myself “WTF” I’m on a Kindle Fire on the Amazon AppStore, why doesnt the Amazon Website doesnt detect I’m using a Kindle Fire?

So, I try to go on the “APPSTORE” within the Kindle Fire itself and search for Star Traders RPG and it cost $1.99 via the Kindle Fire AppStore. Not Cool.

So I tried again via the Amazon AppStore website – “Open the Amazon Appstore for Android on your device to download and install your app.” — NOT HELPFUL! * I already did that!

This is very annoying. There’s a solution. Its not easy. & This is not what this post is about.

Why cant the Amazon Appstore website detect that I’m on a Kindle Fire?
Why does the Amazon Kindle AppStore have a different pricing than on the website?
Why is there a “Third” appstore (Amazon Appstore for Android)?

*Its all very frustrating and annoying!

Splash “Masque” for the Amazon Kindle Fire

December 1, 2011 in Daily Use, How-To

20111207-141801.jpg Have you ever played that game “Operation”? It was pretty fun. But, its not fun if your mistake is like a smudgy, bubbly, scratchy, dotted mess that you have to look at every time you want to browse the web, or watch a movie, or read a book or check your email or write a blog post.

I got a Splash Masque for my Amazon Kindle Fire to protect the fabulous screen. Its a pretty good deal; $19.99 for a 3 pack, vs. ZAGG for $24.99. However, the installation process was horrible and the results were less than desirable.

Here are the basics:

1) The microcloth thing did more harm than good. It was a magnet for lint, dust and debris. 2) The Invisible Screen application tabs was a very cumbersome to maneuver and wield. The sticky tabs also were very sticky so when you finally are ready to remove the last tab you run the risk of actually removing the invisible shield (which I did). 3) The application card (which allows you to squeeze out the bubbles) is tiny, and Im convinced contribute to possible creasing of the film 4) The instructions were very poorly written & should have better detail. 5) The package should come with a cleaning solution.

To be fair… I suppose other products are equally challenging; but, i didnt have as much trouble putting it on my Iphone.

Note: *it would be interesting to see how easy (or hard) to remove the film, clean it, then reply apply it.

Useful Tips:

  • be in a room that doesnt have a lot of dust flying around. (I wouldnt know how to determine that)
  • you gotta be fast! Every moment you hesitate increases the chance that dust particles will fall on your screen
  • keep the film pointed downwards, if you flip it over, chances are – dust will be attracted to it
  • use a better micro-fiber cloth and use a screen cleaning solution
  • have tweezers handy just in case you gotta grab some debris from the screen
  • wash and dry your hands very well before you get started
  • be in a well lit area

Amazon Kindle Software update v.6.2

December 1, 2011 in Daily Use

If you restarted your Amazon Kindle Fire on Nov 29th 2012, then your Kindle Fire probably downloaded an update that installed 6.2 on to your device.

Its a standard update and tweeked a few of your core files.  These are called maintenainance releseases.  A key update looks like it can improve hour battery life and give you the ability to check for updates on downloaded apps.

Note:

If you rooted your device, this update will “unroot” your Kindle Fire.  -but, don’t worry just go back and root your device with SuperOneClick.

Kindle Fire Sleeve

November 28, 2011 in Accessories, Daily Use

This looks very cool. Its described on the site as:

“New “Baroque” style e-reader case. The case features 3mm German Merino Wool Felt in Steel Blue, a leather handhold, a small pocket for accessories and a chrome snap closure.
Wool felt is a biodegradable and renewable material, water-resistant, self-extinguishing, and known for its highly saturated and lightfast colors. Go sheep! It also proved the perfect cushion for those inevitable accidents.”

Check out the store.. they make very cool items. (not affiliated)

If you know of some good links, please add them to the link directory.

Lockscreen Password

November 28, 2011 in Daily Use, Gripe, Wish List

My first attempt at “One Day, nothing but the Amazon Kindle Fire” didnt go as well as I had hoped. Partly, because of the little things (both feature set & usability UI/UX).. One of the “little things” is the lock screen.

20111128-011847.jpgThe lockscreen of Amazon Kindle Fire requires an “OK” after putting in the password. Seems like a small silly thing to notice but it starts to make a difference when you try to use it as fluidly as possible through-out the day.

20111128-011938.jpgIn comparison, the Iphone – you only need to put it in the right password then you are automatically in your device. It simply feels more fluid. Putting in the wrong password gives you the error message.

I understand why its more secure with the Amazon Kindle Fire method. – But, that little “ok” button step still takes something away from the overall user experience.

No Volume Button

November 24, 2011 in Vote - Survey - Poll

A lot of people are complaining that there is no volume button on the kindle fire. I rather like it. Less buttons to accidentally, press.

What do you say? Vote for a Volume Button.

One Day, nothing but the Amazon Kindle Fire

November 23, 2011 in Daily Use

It’s the day before Thanksgiving, things are wrapped for work and its a good day to try having a full day with just using the Amazon Kindle Fire and nothing else.

9am -
Checked my gmail and the experience was ok via the browser. Checking via a browser is a bit necessary for folks that have multiple gmail accounts.

Checked my news feed via PULSE! Very awesome! Its a very smooth news reader that syncs via your different devices. (Highly recommended).

10am -

Rode my bike to the local starbucks, and having a tablet of this form factor is very convienient. Very light, compact and fits easily on a small light bag. (Slightly better than a larger tablet like an Ipad).

Connecting to the Wifi was a bit awkward. It should automatically connect and remember the network, but it doesn’t. I still need to press the little “settings gear” at the top right, press the Wifi button, then “authenticate” then when I launch the browser, authenticate again via the webpage of the Wifi HotSpot. no biggie, but annoying!

**note** Annoying -
The default browser (Silk) doesnt handle ‘form fields’ very well. (which is needed for blogpost, like this post)
**end-note**

1130am

Signed up for twitter ( http://twitter.com/fireusergroup )

Overall not a bad experience but it wasnt great.
